The School of Philosophy, Letters, and Human Sciences was founded on January 25, 1934, under the name Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences, and Letters (FFCL). Conceived as the central hub of the University of São Paulo (USP), it was designed to train researchers in various fields of knowledge, encompassing the exact, human, and biological sciences.

In its current configuration, the School of Philosophy, Letters, and Human Sciences – better known as FFLCH – offers five undergraduate programs: Social Sciences, Philosophy, Geography, History, and Letters, accepting 1,669 new students per year.

Organized into 11 departments, with 23 graduate programs, dozens of centers, centers, and laboratories, and a community of over 15,000 people, FFLCH is USP's largest teaching facility and is spread across six buildings at the Armando de Salles Oliveira University Campus, in Butantã, São Paulo.

Throughout its 89-year history, FFLCH has produced important intellectuals who have made vast contributions to Brazilian political, social, and artistic thought. Considered Brazil's leading center for humanities studies, FFLCH strives to fulfill its threefold mission—teaching, research, and outreach—in an integrated manner.
